This week we have been busy builders. We made a plan of what we wanted to build before using our communication skills (Uses talk to connect ideas CLD)  to help us work together to construct towers, houses, bridges and all sorts of other amazing things with the resources we could find.  ( Uses available resources to create props to support role play EAD)

A magic box also appeared in Shining Stars this week. When we put 2-D shapes inside it and said a magic word, the magic turned them into 3-D shapes. These were a cube, cuboid, pyramid, cylinder, sphere and a cone. Can you find any of these at home? (Beginning to use mathematical names for solid 3D and flat 2D shapes MD)

Space, Rockets and Fireworks!!! Whoosh!

November 16, 2015

At Shining Stars we have spent the last two weeks learning about space, rockets and fireworks. Some children created some fabulous fireworks pictures with glitter,  (Can talk about some of the things they have observed UW) these can be seen on display in Shining Stars.

We used foil and paint to make moon boot prints to hang in Shining Stars, this was an activity the children thoroughly enjoyed, we all got extremely messy, walking with paint on our boots was far more difficult than we had imagined! (Experiments with blocks, colours and marks EAD)

Singing Liz!

October 16, 2015

The children have fantastic opportunities within their Expressive Arts development when they visit Singing Liz each week…..

The session starts off with a lovely hello song, this term some of the children are even learning how to say hello in different languages! Ask your children if they know how to say hello in French or Hindi, let us know if they can remember!

m8m24Here the children are using some stretchy elastic to develop skills in singing fast and slow, this song is a particular favourite of AM’s he loves to try and sing faster each week!!

The children are also practising listening to the number of beats in their name and patterns in their songs. We use a tambourine when we are with Singing Liz and take turns listening to each other (Personal, Social and Emotional Development) The children could practise this at home by clapping – (e.g. sing – ing – Liz would be three claps) see if your child can practise with other words as well as their name this will help them when developing pre reading skills if they can segment words (Literacy Development)

We have also been singing action songs to exercise our fingers and thumbs, and using the instruments to make loud and quiet sounds!

m20m7

At the end of the session, the children take it in turns to use Singing Liz’s tick tock to say good-bye – This week EO was chosen for her continual effort in trying to learn the songs and actions and JB was also chosen for his enthusiasm and increased confidence with Singing Liz this week! Well Done!

Enjoying the sunshine!

October 2, 2015

This week we have been blessed with glorious sunshine and at Shining Stars we have certainly made the most of it! 100_0911

Characteristics of effective learning: Showing high levels of energy. The children certainly showed this characteristic when climbing, balancing and racing down the slide together.

In the mud kitchen we enjoyed searching for worms, showing high levels of fascination (CEL). M said “Look I’ve found a worm, its wiggling and tickling my hand, we need to put him back now and cover him over coz he likes living under mud.” (Using senses to explore the world around them CEL)

We had a lovely afternoon on the school field using the playchute. The children had to listen to instructions, for example “if you are wearing red run under the playchute” and act accordingly.  Shining Stars enjoyed this immensely, the activity produced lots of laughs and giggles! (Paying attention to detail CEL)

Next we will give you an insight as to what the children have been learning with Singing Liz……..
